Some tips to help when you’ve got a plumbing emergency …

I have a clogged drain. How do I unclog it?

If the drain cleaner does not work try using a plunger. Plunge the drain up and down over the opening, causing a vacuum in the drain.

The movement hopefully shift the blockage sufficiently to move and unclog the drain. If the water is still not flowing normally you may still have a partial blockage.

Try plunging the drain repeatedly.

If the problem persists, call us to fully clear the pipe and/or sewer.

My dishwasher is leaking from underneath the unit, what should I do?

The first thing you should do is stop water from continuing to flow. Either turn off the dishwasher shutoff valve located under your sink by turning the valve clockwise or if you cannot locate the valve shutoff your main water shutoff valve.

Check any traps or drains where the dishwasher drains into. The trap or drain may be clogged and can be quickly cleaned out and the situation remedied.

It is important to know where the shutoffs are located for individual fixtures or appliances in your home.

If only one fixture is causing the problem, shut it off first by turning the valve clockwise; you do the same for the main valve in the event of a leaking pipe or other water emergency.

Call us to identify if the problem persists.

After a five-minute shower the water starts to turn cold. How can I fix this?

If the water heater is electric, the element that heats the water may not be operating properly, and not heating the water to the correct temperature. The cause of this problem could be a bad element or a thermostatic malfunction.

Call us to replace check your system and replace the thermostat if necessary.

I have no hot water. What should I do?

The action you take will depend upon whether your hot water system is electric or gas fuelled.

Common electric water heater issues are:

  • Replacing heating elements
  • Checking and replacing the thermostat
  • Leaking pressure relief valve
  • Leaking water unit
  • Replacing the water heater drain valve

These are all jobs for qualified plumbers so call us if you are experiencing a problem with your electric hot water service.

Common gas hot water heater issues are:

  • Hot water heater pilot light goes out
  • Gas water heater thermocouple needs to be replaced
  • Leaking pressure relief valve
  • Leaking water unit
  • Replacing the water heater drain valve

If the pilot light gone out you could try relighting it using the manufacturer’s instructions (usually on the heater itself). All other issues must be fixed by a qualified plumber so call us if you are experiencing a problem with your gas hot water service.

The danger with a gas hot water heater is the gas itself. If for some reason gas is allowed to escape without being ignited, you can get an explosive situation, so it is important to turn off the gas if you are unable to relight the gas pilot and can smell leaking gas contact us immediately to repair the leak and relight your gas appliances.

Can I temporarily fix a leaking pipe?

First turn of the water supply. Using plumber’s epoxy or teflon tape can help to block water leaking from a loose joint or other small leaks.

Even towels and rags around a light leak can prevent water from ending up all over your home.

How do I fix a leaking tap?

If a tap is leaking it is usually 1 of 3 things: the washer, the o-ring or the jumper valve. The tap needs to be disassembled to replace any of these faulty parts and requires the job of a qualified plumber with the correct tools to change the parts quickly and without damage to your tapware.

Most flick master taps are sealed units and cannot be repaired. Call us to replace a leaking flixmaster or to repair other types of leaking taps.

If the water is spraying out of the tap turn off the main water valve to your house before calling us. The mains tap is usually found at the front of your house or in the street. If you’re in an apartment the mains tap will probably be in the bathroom or laundry.

What do I do if I smell gas?
